SPF 30, SPF 50, and SPF 100 look like they should represent dramatically different levels of protection. On paper, 100 is more than three times 30. In practice, the actual difference in how much UV radiation each one blocks is tiny, and understanding why reveals a lot about how to think about sunscreen shopping in general.

This isn't universal, plenty of well-formulated high-SPF sunscreens feel light and blend easily, but it's worth actually testing a formula's texture before assuming a higher number is automatically the better choice for daily wear. A high-SPF sunscreen that feels unpleasant enough that you apply it thinly, or skip it on busy days, delivers less real protection than a lower-SPF formula you're happy to use generously and reapply on schedule.
Choosing Between Them in Practice
For most daily, low-to-moderate sun exposure, SPF 30 broad spectrum, applied generously and reapplied as needed, covers the vast majority of situations well. For extended outdoor days, SPF 50 offers a modest additional buffer, particularly useful when reapplication might be inconsistent, like during a long hike or a day of errands where touching up isn't convenient. SPF 100 tends to appeal most to people who want the largest possible theoretical safety margin, or who know their own reapplication habits are inconsistent and want the higher ceiling as a partial buffer, though it's not a substitute for reapplying on schedule.

The jump from SPF 30 to SPF 100 sounds dramatic, and mathematically it is, in the sense that you're tripling a number. But the actual percentage of UV radiation blocked barely moves, from about 96.7% to about 99%.
